A couple of interesting things happened to be this week... I had my first break, since the trainees came!! It is really very bizarre, to experience quietness after soo long of being in a very noisy atmosphere!!! It just reminded me of last summer in Estonia!! When i realized my personal space is actually important me!! And as much as i love being with people, i also love being with myself!!
I spent a couple of wonderful days with Raz and Naz, writing some interesting random stories of friendship!! and buying NASA...
I hosted two trainees till their flat got ready!! and its just so funny how different people act in such different ways!! Kaitlin ended up staying two nights with me, she is such a sweetheart, i felt she was soo similiar in certain aspects!! I took her to the travel agency with me, my high schools graduation and a wedding before meeting the salaamers at AUC after Grad party..
It was quite an interesting day!! Travel Agency with a tiny bit depressing!! Planning the next year of your life with a ticket!! A little bit weird... Cool part im going to london on the 24ths for 4 days before i get to Vancouver[or otherwise known as HongCouver].. My mom didnt help how i felt about the one year leaving home, she keep telling to extend my flight saying once there by the end of the year i wouldnt want to come back.. So im staying there 20 days after i am done with school coming back on the 20th of May... My God how i am going to miss my family, my home, my streets, my people!!
Graduation was sad.. i realized i graduated form high school three years ago!!! Seems soo long ago!! Quite fun seeing a bunch of really ambititous students finish school ready for their adventure, wherever it may be..And how can i forget Choueifat's pride and joy Hatim going off on a full scholarship to Harvard!! He changed his speech to sound very Marxist, trying to get Students and Parents playing their role to influence changes in the School!! and pushing to revolt against the system!! I could see my ex-principal face's go white!! Hatim continued his speech by talking about our generation, not taking things from previous generations. Which i didnt really agree on!!
The wedding, i love weddings no matter where i am, its one of most interesting tools to see the culture.. It was really funny going with Nadia[greek] and Kaitlin... I took Nadia and Sarah M to this henna night[which is like the brides bacherolette party]. Where in a nutshell, an bunch of women going crazy together, sharing the excitement of the bride, just by belly dancing the night away!! This is henna was fun to take the girls with me, cause all the womens had worn belly dancing outfits[sure guys fantasize about being in a room with half naked women dancing an exotic dance]. A funny thought that i had to mention, is it is soo different comparing how women dance in the henna than in the wedding!! In the wedding, first they had more clothes on, as well as it was funny observing how most of the women, didnt not show off their dancing skills like the henna, trying not to draw the wrong kind of attention.. as a girls reputation is very important in this part of the world!!
So what is up with the henna thing, and where did it come from?
"the earliest written artifact that mentions henna being used specifically as an adornment for a bride or women's special occassion is in the Ugaritic legand of Baal and Anath, inscibed on a tablet from about 2100 BC, from north west Syria!! Anath was a goddess of fertility and battle. In the legand she had adorned her hands with henna before battle, and brides ornamented their hands with henna as a preparation of their wedding. As henna is mentioned as a part of a legand, may be inferred that henna was in use by the Ugaritic people, as a bridal tradition, and as a women's celebratory cosmetic along the easter coast of teh mediterraneon for many centuries prior to 2000 BC.
When Islam began in the 6th-7th century AD, henna was incoporated into the customs of Muslims from the western Middle Eastern women's henna traditions that were widespread and long established. As Islam expanded quickly into other countries. the use of henna went with it"
